Global superstardom is on the cards for Vogue India’s May-June cover star Alia Bhatt, who was just announced as Italian luxury house Gucci’s first global ambassador from India, this morning. Following her successful debut at the Met Gala— the most gatekept fashion event of the year, Bhatt was perhaps the obvious choice for an expansion in the fashion space.
Apart from Bhatt, up till now, only a handful of Indian faces have explored the fashion territory on such a global scale, which includes the likes of Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. Bhatt’s appointment, which comes close at the heels of her much-anticipated Met Gala debut, is a significant moment for the brand and for the Indian fashion industry. It is the first time that the brand has appointed an Indian celebrity as a global ambassador, in what seems to be a growing global recognition of the Indian market.
This new move from a mega luxury house, following suit of competitors, perhaps also signals a change in the global perception of the power of Indian talent.
