Louis Vuitton and Sotheby’s have joined forces on a dedicated auction, featuring 22 distinct Louis Vuitton Artycapucines bags, which see contemporary artists reinvent the brand’s Capucines bag with signature designs.
The Artycapucines bags listed in the auction are all exclusive iterations crafted with the same exacting savoir-faire as the brand’s previously-debuted, limited-edition versions. The sale will include designs by artists including Daniel Buren, Sam Falls, Urs Fischer, Gregor Hildebrandt, Donna Huanca, Huang Yuxing, Alex Israel, Liu Wei, Peter Marino, Beatriz Milhazes, Vik Muniz, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Park Seo-Bo, Paola Pivi, Ugo Rondinone, Tschabalala Self, Josh Smith, Jonas Wood, Kennedy Yanko, Zeng Fanzhi and Zhao Zhao.
Each bag will arrive packaged inside a monogram-laden Louis Vuitton Boîte Chapeau (or hat box), which will be signed by the artists. Notably, the bags themselves will also feature artists’ signatures under the flap.
The Capucines bag, which debuted in 2013, takes its name from the Rue Neuve-des-Capucines, or the street where Louis Vuitton cut the ribbon to its first-ever storefront in 1854. Now, the quintessential accessory is among the brand’s most revered creations, featuring full-grain Taurillon leather and varying styles, including hand, shoulder and cross-body.
The Louis Vuitton and Sotheby’s Artycapucines auction will open for online bidding between June 28 and July 12 on Sotheby’s website, and the featured bags will be on view at Sotheby’s Paris from July 1 to 5. Louis Vuitton will donate the net proceeds to a specific charity or NGO of the artist’s selection.
