For the second year in a row, Bentley Motors has been recognized as a "Net Zero Plastic to Nature" company. Following a thorough waste stewardship evaluation of the company's campus and local activities, South Pole, a globally renowned climate company, awarded accreditation. Although South Pole's most recent endorsement highlights the company's continuous efforts to meet ambitious environmental objectives, throughout its manufacturing operations to the end-consumer, Bentley was the first automaker to receive the groundbreaking accreditation in 2022.
Following South Pole's initial comprehensive analysis in 2021, Bentley's environmental plastics impact was widely reevaluated. The evaluation included the disposal of plastic protection downstream at international dealerships as well as operational packing for macro-plastic parts used in production and shipping. Moreover, it evaluated microplastic emissions from tire abrasion as a component of the logistics and product lifecycle.
Bentley successfully raised the level of waste management and traceability for its plastic waste in order to reach Net Zero Plastic to Nature status in 2022. In 2022, 97% of the plastic waste was processed, reducing the amount of non-processed plastic waste that needed to be mitigated. Processing is done on all incoming logistics packaging, with a focus on export minimization and zero waste-to-landfill. Bentley then made an investment in approved units in support of "Second Life Thailand," a plastic waste collection initiative that focuses on the recovery, recycling, and reuse of plastic that is bound for the ocean as well as land. Funding allocated for mitigation was equal to the total amount of unprocessed plastic garbage discovered in 2022.
Andreas Lehe, Board Member for Manufacturing at Bentley Motors, said:
“Bentley’s aim is to be the world’s most sustainable, luxury automotive brand. Our Beyond100 strategy is reinventing every aspect of the business and the Net Zero Plastic to Nature award is further proof of our efforts to address our environmental impact.
“For example, at our production headquarters in Crewe, we are working closely with our waste management suppliers to ensure that all waste is treated, while implementing plastic reduction and optimisation initiatives to cut plastic usage. This includes a reduction in the overall size of our textile car covers, and a new collaboration with our UK waste manager, Veolia on the proper management of the waste it generates at our Crewe facility.
“Nevertheless, we are aware plastic usage extends beyond the manufacturing process. Plastics are used in the delivery of vehicles to dealerships and customers. These are all waste management concerns that we continue to address in our Beyond100 strategy.”
Sebastian Benndorf, Director of Production Planning at Bentley Motors, added:
“South Pole has again supported Bentley with our global understanding of the company's plastics footprint. The new waste stewardship appraisal has given Bentley a further insight into our global operations and the impact it has on the environment. We continue to make every effort to ensure we achieve the aims of Beyond100 and tackle plastic waste issues head-on.”
Leading businesses seeking to attain net zero emissions are advised to do so by South Pole. It employs comprehensive tactics to assist organizations worldwide in strengthening their resilience and converting climate action into sustainable economic possibilities through its global Climate Solutions platform. It is in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
